Gas Safety Week 2018: Top Tips

Gas Safety Week 2018 / Complete Property Revival

Most of us use gas appliances for cooking and heating every day. It’s important to ensure they are working safely as poorly maintained appliances can pose a serious safety threat to homes and families.

Follow these top tips to stay Gas Safe in your home:

  1. Ensure all your gas appliances are safety checked annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  2. Always ensure engineers are fully qualified by asking to see the front and back of their Gas Safe Register ID card, which should contain a unique license number and explains the type of work they are qualified to carry out.
  3. Know the warning signs of carbon monoxide poisoning including headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapsing and loss of consciousness.
  4. Know the warning signs of faulty appliances including lazy yellow flames, excessive condensation and black marks or stains – although appliances can be unsafe and show no warning signs, so always have them checked annually.
  5. Install a carbon monoxide detector.
  6. Never cover or block ventilation bricks, grilles or outside flues.
  7. If you live in rented accommodation, ask to see the landlord or housing provider’s Gas Safety Record.
  8. If you think an appliance may be faulty, stop using it immediately. If you think there may be a gas leak or carbon monoxide leak in your home, call the National Gas Emergency Line immediately on 0800 111 999.
